Men's Hoops Can't Overcome Amherst in Sunday Setback

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's basketball team stifled Bowdoin in the second half to take a 68-56 win on Sunday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium. The Mammoths move to 15-6 (5-3 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 11-11 (2-7 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin hung with Amherst in the opening half, trailing just 34-31 at halftime.
  • James McGowan (12) and Xander Werkman (10) combined for 22 of Bowdoin's 31 points as a late lay-in by Workman trimmed the Mammoth lead to three before the break.
  • Bowdoin cut the lead to two points, 37-35 following a McGowan three-pointer with 15:21 to go, but the hosts responded with a 8-2 surge to push the lead back to eight points.
  • The Polar Bears kept clawing back but could get no closer than four points as they shot just 25% in the second period.
  • Amherst went 10-14 from the free throw line in the second half to seal the win.
By The Numbers
  • Grant Robinson and Garrett Day lifted Amherst to victory, scoring 24 points apiece.
  • Bowdoin was led by 19 points from James McGowan and 11 from Xander Werkman. McGowan also had a team-best ten rebounds and five assists.
  • The Mammoths finished at 39% shooting but held Bowdoin to 32% for the contest.
