Amherst Runs Away From Bowdoin in Women's Basketball

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Amherst College women's basketball team used a suffocating defensive effort to defeat Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon, 72-54, in Morrell Gymnasium. The Mammoths improve to 16-2 (5-2 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 16-5 (5-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • A low-scoring first quarter saw the teams neck-and-neck until the final 90 seconds when a quick 7-2 run by the Mammoths give the visitors a 15-8 advantage following a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Gabrielle Zaffiro.
  • Amherst shot 56% in the second quarter to create some distance from the Polar Bears, outscoring Bowdoin 23-13, including a half-court heave from AnLing Vera that was ruled good to give the Mammoths a 38-21 lead at the break.
  • Amherst pushed the lead to as many as 31 points in the third quarter before Bowdoin posted a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring the Mammoths 21-8 to close the final margin to 18.
