Women's Hoops Dominates Early, Holds Off Bates To Cap Semester

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team built a huge halftime lead and then held off a late Bates rally to come away with a 62-57 road win over the Bobcats on Thursday evening. The Polar Bears never trailed in the game as they finish their first semester with a record of 7-1.

  • Bowdoin dominated the first half, building a lead that would prove insurmountable.
  • The Polar Bears got eight early points from Sydney Jones in building an 18-10 lead after the first quarter of play.
  • Bowdoin continued to roll in the second quarter, going 7-11 from the field as a team as Annie Boasberg connected on a pair of three pointers to push the lead to 35-15 at the break.
  • The Polar Bears would push the lead to as many as 22 points in the third quarter before Bates began clawing back into the contest.
  • The Bobcats shot 72% in the final quarter, taking advantage of six Bowdoin turnovers and missed free throws to come within a single possession late in the quarter.
  • Bowdoin was able to stem the tide, however, getting a late bucket from Jones and a pair of late free throws from Sela Kay to seal the win.

  • Bowdoin shot 48% from the field and owned a 35-33 edge in rebounding while holding the Bobcats to 33% shooting.
  • Sydney Jones continued her red-hot start to the season, leading the Polar Bears with 22 points to go with four rebounds and three steals.
  • Annie Boasberg scored eight and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Jess Giorgio also added eight points and five boards.
  • Bates closed the final margin thanks to a 22-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.
  • The win snaps a brief two-game losing streak by Bowdoin to Bates. The Polar Bears had won 14 straight between the teams prior to falling in both matchups last season.
  • The teams will play their NESCAC conference game in Brunswick on February 3.
