Women's Hoops Returns to Action in Blowout of St. Joseph's - Long Island

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team erupted for a season-high 93 points in a decisive 93-55 win over St. Joseph's College – Long Island in the opener of the NYU Holiday Classic Thursday evening. The Polar Bears improve to 8-1 on the season and will take on the host school in the de facto title match of the classic on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-3 on the year with the loss.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears scored 22 points in the opening quarter, thanks to seven points from Annie Boasberg and six points from Sydney Jones, to open up a 22-10 advantage after ten minutes of play.
  • The Golden Eagles stayed within striking distance, as the teams combined to shoot 55% and 58 points in a high-scoring second quarter that saw Bowdoin's lead hold at 50-40 at intermission.
  • Bowdoin locked down defensively from there, holding St. Joseph's to just 17 points (and four made field goals) in the second half.
  • Meanwhile,  the Polar Bears put the game out of reach with a 26-point third quarter, including a 21-3 stretch that pushed the lead to 76-49 entering the final period.
  • Bowdoin led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter on their way to the victory.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin finished at 42% shooting for the game, but were propelled by 12 three-pointers and 15-18 shooting from the free throw stripe.
  • Sydney Jones led the Polar Bears with 15 points and six assists with three blocks while Annie Boasberg had 11 points and eight rebounds.
  • Maria Belardi had a career-best 13 points off the bench as the Polar Bears totaled 46 bench points and 19 points off turnovers in the win.
  • Bowdoin owned a 58-36 edge on the glass, forced 20 turnovers and held the Golden Eagles to 4-31 (12%) shooting in the second half of the win.
