Second Half Shooting Sinks Men's Hoops Against Carnegie Mellon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team fell victim to a cold-shooting second half in a 79-66 loss to Carnegie Mellon on day two of the UAA/NESCAC Challenge Sunday at the University of Rochester. The Polar Bears stand at 3-5 on the season following the setback. Carnegie Mellon is 6-1 this season.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears came out hot, and after trading buckets in the early going, used a huge 23-2 run to take a commanding 26-9 lead midway through the opening period.
  • James McGowan scored seven points in the run as Bowdoin maintained a double-digit lead, 32-21 with under eight minutes to play in the half.
  • Carnegie Mellon closed the period on an 18-5 run, taking the lead on a late three-pointer and carrying a 39-37 edge into the locker room.
  • The teams traded buckets in the first few minutes of the second half before Carnegie Mellon began pulling away.
  • After taking a 43-41 lead with 17:03 to play on a Xander Werkman layup, Bowdoin hit just one field goal over the next eight minutes as the Tartans pulled away.
  • By the time Michael Simonds hit a three-pointer with 8:45 to go, the Bowdoin deficit was double figures.
  • Bowdoin would close the gap to eight points with 6:52 remaining but could get no closer as Carnegie Mellon hit 13-16 from the free throw line in the second half to clinch the win.

  • The Tartans went 20-28 from the free throw line in the game while Bowdoin connected on just 7-16.
