Hot Shooting Propels Men's Basketball Over UMPI in Midweek Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team held off Maine-Presque Isle, 81-70, in a non-conference win at Morrell Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The Polar Bears get back in the win column after a three-game losing skid and improve to 4-5 while the Owls drop to 1-6.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin never trailed, but couldn't put the Owls away despite red-hot first half shooting.
  • The Polar Bears went 7-11 from long distance in the opening frame but committed nine turnovers as UMPI stayed within striking distance, 44-36, at intermission.
  • Jaden Hill and Michael Simonds both went a perfect 3-3 from three-point range in the opening half.
  • Bowdoin pushed the lead to 15 right out of the gate with a 7-0 run, but the Owls answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to seven, 51-44.
  • The Polar Bears maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the second period as UMPI could get no closer than eight points for the remainder.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin finished at 50% shooting for the contest, including 10-18 from three-point distance, but was balanced out by 26 turnovers.
  • Simonds led five Polar Bears in double figures with 20 to go with five boards and three assists.
  • Jaden Hill scored a career-high 17 points, including five trifectas, while James McGowan added 13 with seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Nolan Bessire scored 11 and Xander Werkman had ten in the winning effort.
  • Bowdoin owned a 48-34 rebounding edge, held UMPI to 37% from the field, and got 32 points from their bench in the victory.
