Women's Basketball Returns to Action With Double-Digit Win at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team never trailed as Sydney Jones matched her career high with 28 points in a 60-48 win over Colby on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (4-1) pick up a win in their first game action in two weeks as the Mules fall to 3-3.

Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears opened up a 9-2 lead out of the gate and never trailed, but couldn't put the Mules away until the fourth quarter in a low-scoring, defensive battle.
  • Sydney Jones scored seven of Bowdoin's 12 points in the opening quarter and almost singlehandedly outscored Colby in the first half (14-17) as Bowdoin owned a 25-17 lead at intermission.
  • The teams picked up the scoring in the second half, which saw the Polar Bears open up as much as a 14-point lead following a Jai Duval basket midway through the third quarter (34-20).
  • Bowdoin was able to answer every Colby surge for the remainder of the contest, as the Mules cut the lead to eight points on two occasions, including with 7:18 to go.
  • The Polar Bears answered with a Sydney Jones steal and Megan Tan three-pointer that pushed the lead back to double digits (47-36) with under six to go and Colby would get no closer.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin's defense was stifling, holding the Mules to 34% from the field and forcing 23 turnovers, which they converted into 22 points.
  • Sydney Jones was the lone Polar Bear in double figures, matching her career high of 28 points which she set last year against Bates. She went 8-15 from the field and 11-12 from the free throw line while adding six rebounds and three assists.
  • Annie Boasberg led Bowdoin with seven rebounds and four steals while Sela Kay, in her first action of the season ended with eight points
  • The Polar Bears sealed the win with a 14-16 performance from the free throw line in the fourth quarter as Colby attempted to climb back into the contest.
  • The win avenges a season-ending loss to Colby in the NESCAC First Round last winter when a shorthanded Polar Bear team dropped to the Mules for the first time since 2011.
  • Bowdoin has now won 20 of the last 21 meetings between the teams and is 41-4 against the Mules dating back to 2001.
Up Next
  • The Polar Bears will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they play their rescheduled game at WPI at 3:00 p.m.
