Amherst Posts Fourth Quarter Comeback to Tip Polar Bear Football

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College football team couldn't hold a fourth quarter lead and fell to Amherst on Saturday, 17-14. The Polar Bears fall to 2-6 this season while the Mammoths improve to 2-6.

Game Highlights
  • Amherst's first touchdown of the game came immediately following a Bowdoin turnover early in the first quarter. After intercepting the ball at the Bowdoin 30, Amherst covered 27 yards in four plays to score on a Jack Roberge run at 12:19 of the first.
  • Bowdoin's offense answered with increasingly better drives as the Polar Bear defense clamped down on the Mammoths for the remainder of the half.
  • The Polar Bears tied the game on their lengthiest drive of the year, holding the ball for 11:03 and marching 53 yards on 17 plays, scoring on a four-yard run by Andre Eden at 7:51 of the second quarter to make it 7-7 at the break.
  • After another interception deep in their own territory, the Bowdoin defense was able to hold Amherst to a field goal midway through the third quarter, giving the hosts a 10-7 edge.
  • Bowdoin's offense rebounded on their final drive of the third quarter, however, going 65 yards on six plays and getting a 21-yard scoring strike from Robby Long to Colton Fahey for a 14-10 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • After the teams traded possessions, Amherst got a great return on a punt to the Bowdoin 27, setting up their go-ahead score. Seven plays later, Mike Piazza found Owen Gaydos for an eight-yard touchdown pass to give the Mammoths a 17-14 lead with 11:06 remaining.
  • Bowdoin had two more possessions to retake the lead in the fourth quarter, but went three-and-out on their first and were intercepted on the other, clinching the win for Amherst.
