Big Second Half Vaults Men's Hoops to Non-Conference Win Over Babson

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team rallied from 12 points down with 17:30 to go to stun Babson, 82-74, on Sunday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium. The impressive comeback win by the Polar Bears improves the team to 3-2 while dropping the Beavers to 4-3 this season.
 
Game Highlights
  • Babson held a six-point edge at halftime thanks to a last-second three-pointer from Nate Amado right before the buzzer, 45-39.
  • The Polar Bears shot 57% from the field in the opening half but were victimized by nine turnovers.
  • The visitors opened the second half on a 11-5 surge, extending their lead to 12 points, 56-44, following a Parker Mason three-pointer with 17:35 to go.
  • Bowdoin answered with an authoritative 10-0 run, closing the gap to just two points following a pair of free throws from James McGowan with 11:40 remaining.
  • The teams traded buckets until Xander Werkman's lay-in with 9:15 to go tied the game at 61 apiece. A minute later, another Werkman bucket gave Bowdoin the lead for good, 66-65.
  • Werkman's second basket sparked a decisive 9-0 run for the Polar Bears, who built their lead to 73-65 following seven straight points from James McGowan.
  • Babson was able to cut the lead to five points, 77-72, with under two minutes to play but could get no closer as Bowdoin's defense held the Beavers to just nine points in the final 8:30 of the game.

  • James McGowan scored 26 of his game-high 28 points in an electric second-half effort that included a pair of three-pointers and 8-11 from the free throw line.
  • Xander Werkman scored a season-high 18 points with eight boards while Michael Simonds added 16 points and three steals.
  • Nolan Bessire added a key ten points off the bench on 5-6 shooting.
  • Nate Amado led Babson with 22 points in the loss.
  • Bowdoin finished at 51.7% shooting in the win and held Babson to just 43%, including 28% from three-point range.
  • The Polar Bears owned a 42-37 edge in rebounding and outscored Babson 38-18 over the final 17:30 to secure the victory.
