Men's Hoops Sprints Past Nor'easters in Home-Opening Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team ran away from the University of New England in their home opener in Morrell Gymnasium on Tuesday night, 81-51. The Polar Bears stand at 2-2 this season while the Nor'easters fall to 2-4.
 
Game Highlights
  • After UNE took an early 4-2 edge, Bowdoin rolled off a 9-2 run, capped by a Michael Simonds three-pointer to take the lead for good.
  • Bowdoin shot 57% from the field as they built a 36-23 halftime lead, thanks in great part to a six-point run by Afamdi Achufusi midway through the frame.
  • The Nor'easters trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 11 points with 17:10 to go, 40-29, following a three-pointer from Winston Bryan, but Bowdoin immediately responded with a game-deciding run.
  • Sparked by five points from James McGowan and capped by a three-pointer by Alex Halpern, Bowdoin went on a 14-4 surge over the next four minutes, pushing the lead to 21 points, 54-33.
  • The Polar Bears pushed the lead to as many as 32 points in the closing minutes on their way to the win.

  • James McGowan scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, finishing with a trio of three-pointers and eight rebounds.
  • Xander Werkman had 13 points and eight boards while Afamdi Achufusi totaled ten points and five rebounds.
  • Jaden Hill and Kevin Reeves (5-5 from the field) both finished with career-high ten points apiece.
  • Bowdoin ended at 54% shooting for the game and owned a 48-24 edge in rebounding, cashing in 12 second-chance points, while holding UNE to 33% shooting for the game.
