Swarthmore Pulls Away From Bowdoin in Second Half of Season-Opening Loss

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team outscored Bowdoin 50-33 in the second half of a 90-68 win on Saturday in the Polar Bears' season-opener. Bowdoin falls to 0-1 while the Garnet improve to 2-0 this season. 

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin was able to hang with the Garnet in the opening half, shooting 45% from the field and knocking down six three-pointers.
  • A three-pointer by Alex Halpern cut the lead to just a single point, 36-35 with two minutes to go in the half, but the Garnet used a quick spurt to push the lead to 40-35 at halftime. 
  • Swarthmore turned it on in the second period, connecting on 54% from the field and holding Bowdoin to just 41%, including 0-6 from long distance to pull away.
By The Numbers
  • James McGowan led Bowdoin with 21 points while Xander Werkman added 14.
  • Michael Simonds added nine points while Jaden Hill had six with four assists. 
  • Swarthmore's depth proved to be the difference as the Garnet's bench outscored Bowdoin's 41-14 for the contest. 
  • The Garnet also held a 38-30 edge in rebounding.
