Women's Soccer Travels to Scranton For NCAA Tournament Opener Saturday

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's soccer team (10-4-2) will play Scranton (16-2-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The game is part of a four-team regional hosted by the University of Scranton that will also include another first round match between Emerson (12-3-5) and Westfield State (15-3-1). Sunday's second round match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

POLAR BEAR NOTES
The Polar Bears will be making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance all-time and first since 2015 after receiving an at-large bid in selections announced on Monday…in their last appearance in the national tournament, the Polar Bears defeated Johns Hopkins in the opening round before falling to Stevens…The Polar Bears' only previous meeting with Scranton also came in the NCAA Tournament in 2012 when the teams played to a 0-0 tie and Bowdoin advanced on penalty kicks…Bowdoin had four players honored in All-NESCAC awards handed out this week… Greta Farkas was named as a First Team All-NESCAC selection while Alex Arndt, Jess Klein, and Samaya Bernardo were all tabbed as Second Team All-NESCAC selections. Bowdoin's four All-Conference honorees are the most for the program since 2015…playing one of the most challenging schedules in Division III this fall, the Polar Bears were one of six NESCAC teams to make the NCAA Division III Tournament – the most of any conference in the nation…Bowdoin is 3-10-2 in its 11 previous trips to the NCAA Tournament and will be looking for their first-ever appearance in the "Sweet Sixteen"
 
AROUND THE REGIONAL
Scranton won its third-straight Landmark Conference title last weekend and will be hosting a regional for the second straight year. It is the 21st overall tournament appearance in program history and the Royals have advanced past the first round in each of the last four seasons. A season ago, Scranton notched victories over Nazareth and SUNY Geneseo to advance to the Sweet 16…Emerson won the NEWMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed behind a game-winning goal from Caitlin Johnston in the 77th minute of Saturday's 1-0 championship game victory over Clark to punch the program's first ticket to the NCAA Tournament in program history…Westfield State is back in the field of 64 for a second straight year and the ninth time overall after capturing the MASCAC title with a 1-0 win over Fitchburg State. A season ago, the Owls fell to eventual National Runner-up TCNJ by a score of 4-0 in the opening round.
