Vassar Ends Women's Rugby Winning Streak in Regular Season Finale

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's rugby team lost for the first time since October of 2019, falling to Vassar on Saturday, 26-19.
 
Match Highlights
  • It was a tale of two halves and missed opportunities as the Polar Bears struggled to maintain possession and gave up two first half tries to Vassar, both converted. 
  • Trailing 14-0 at the break, Bowdoin stepped up the pressure and outscored the visitors 19-12, but couldn't complete the comeback in the eventual loss.
  • Rebecca Vakarau out-stepped three defenders for Bowdoin's first try seven minutes into the 2nd half to bring the score to 14-5. Twenty-five minutes later , and after another Vassar converted try, Vakarau received the ball space to maneuver and once again had a 50-meter run, scoring under the posts. Kyra Bishop made the conversion kick, bringing the score to 12-26.
  • With a Bowdoin penalty played to the forwards, Kyra Bishop crashed over from five meters out and converted her own try, closing the final margin to 26-19
  • Leading tacklers were Kyra Bishop with 19, Ella Garnett with 13 and Evie Hamer with 12.
  • Bowdoin's last loss, on October 19, 2019, was also to Vassar. The Polar Bears had won 17 consecutive intercollegiate 15's matches.

  • After an off week, Bowdoin will return to action on November 12 in the NIRA Division III semifinals. Their opponent and location will be announced this week.
