Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Starts Season Strong in Win Over UNE

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team returned to action for its 2021 campaign and kicked off the season with a 5-2 win over visiting University of New England on Wednesday night.

The Polar Bears begin the year 1-0, while handing the Nor'easters their first loss of the season (2-1).

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin started the game's scoring 5:20 into the first quarter. Bailey Prete scored her first collegiate goal by tracking down a tight rebound on the left post and besting Lindsay Pych.
  • The Polar Bears scored another goal five minutes into the second frame, again off the stick of Prete. Abby Bashaw carried the ball towards the end line on the right side of the circle and crossed to the near post for a one-timer by Prete.
  • Bowdoin added another goal to take a 3-0 lead just three minutes later. Manveer Sandhu took a direct shot from the top of the circle on a corner, with Faith Jennings deflecting the ball into cage.
  • UNE broke through 50 seconds into the third quarter. Jillian Lachapelle came down the right wing and curled towards the circle before sliding a long pass to Sarah Padellaro on the far side. Padellaro swept the ball to the near post.
  • Jill Cloonan answered eight minutes later, finishing off a scrum on the right post.
  • The Nor'easters were quick to answer as Lachapelle pushed a shot to the right corner past a diving Maddie Ferrucci.
  • Sandhu capped the game's scoring with 6:35 remaining. The Polar Bears were pressuring Dawn DeWeese-Moss on the right side, not allowing for a clean clear, and Sandhu was able to find space and flick a shot into the net.

  • Bowdoin held an 18-3 shot advantage and 8-3 edge in corners.
  • Pych made five saves in the start for UNE and DeWeese-Moss made six.
