Mammoths Stifle Field Hockey in Saturday Matchup

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to Amherst in its NESCAC opening game on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears sit at 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC) following the loss. The Mammoths improve to 2-0 (1-0 NESCAC) after holding off a late Bowdoin push.
 
Game Highlights
  • Amherst broke through just 2:45 into the game. Muffie Mazambani inserted on a penalty corner from the left side and fed directly to Beth Williamson. Williamson fired a shot from the top of the circle and found the back of the net, near left post.
  • The Polar Bears answered back at 10:14. Abby Bashaw broke away down the middle and deep into Mammoth territory, carrying towards the right side. Bashaw sent a long cross to the far post where Faith Jennings deflected the ball into net.
  • Just three minutes into the third quarter, the Mammoths again converted on a penalty corner. The pair of Mazambani and Williams combined for another goal.
 
By the Numbers
  • Amherst held a slight 7-6 edge in shots. The Polar Bears held a 7-4 corner advantage.
  • Maddie Ferrucci made four saves for Bowdoin and Claudia Kriz had a defensive save in the final quarter.
  • Kaitlin Broda made five saves for Amherst.
