Bowdoin Can't Overcome Early Deficit in Football Loss to Trinity

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College football team couldn't overcome an early deficit and dropped to Trinity, 38-14, in its home opener at Whittier Field Saturday. The Polar Bears fall to 0-2 on the season while Trinity improves to 2-0.

Game Highlights
  • A tightly contested first half saw Trinity pounce on a late Bowdoin miscue to take a 17-0 lead at the half.
  • The Bantams had built a 10-7 lead on a pair of long drives, scoring on a 22-yard field goal by Matt Jumes and then cappting a seven-play, 62-yard drive with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Fetter to Jack Barrett.
  • Bowdoin responded with a 13-play, 47-yard drive, highlighted by a fourth-and-five conversion at midfield, and marched down to the Trinity 9 with a first-and-goal to go. But William Crowley stepped in front of a Griff Stalcup pass over the middle, to deny the Polar Bears a touchdown.
  • Trinity answered with a 10-play, 80-yard drive to finish the half, scoring on a Fetter pass to Jonathan Girard from 13 yards out to take a 17-0 advantage into the break.
  • The Bantams added to their lead with a William Kirby touchdown run to open the third quarter before Bowdoin's offense came alive.
  • Following a bad snap on a Trinity punt, Andre Eden scored his first collegiate touchdown with a 13-yard scamper to make it 24-7.
  • Another Kirby touchdown run made it 31-7 Bantams, but Bowdoin responded with its best drive of the day, an 11-play, 80-yard drive, and scored on a Stalcup run from 14 yards out to cut the lead to 31-14 with 11:53 to go.
  • Bowdoin had a chance to cut into the lead further, driving to the Trinity 32 with a chance to cut the lead to single digits with 7 minutes to play. But a fumble ended all hopes of a comeback and Trinity added a late score on a 19-yard strike from Fetter to DeVante Reid to close out the scoring.

  • Receiver DeVante Reid led the way for the Trinity offense, catching 11 balls for 205 yards and a touchdown. Fetter went 23-36 and three scores through the air.
