Men's Basketball Uses Late Run To Survive in Road Win at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team survived a furious second half rally to take a 83-82 win over Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday evening. The Polar Bears improve to 4-2 on the year while the Mariners drop to 1-4.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin came out firing in the opening half, putting up 53 points thanks to eight three-pointers and 11 MMA turnovers.
  • Leading 40-39 with four minutes to go in the period, the Polar Bears closed the half on a 13-0 run, getting seven points from Taiga Kagitomi in the surge to take a 53-39 edge at the break.
  • MMA opened the second half on an enormous 22-2 surge, taking the lead on a three-pointer by Tyler Gobeil just five minutes into the period.
  • The Mariners held a six-point edge, 77-71, with 4:08 to go before Bowdoin began its rally.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Michael Simonds quickly tied the score, but a late three-pointer and free throw from MMA's Carter Rubine gave the hosts an 82-81 edge with a minute to go.
  • The teams traded possessions until Bowdoin's James McGowan drew a foul driving to the hoop with 17 seconds left. McGowan netted both free throws to give the Polar Bears an 83-82 lead.
  • MMA had a pair of late three-point attempts to take the lead, but both missed as Bowdoin clung to victory.

  • MMA shot 53% for the game, including 13-24 from three-point range, but committed 20 turnovers, as Bowdoin cashed in for 27 points off turnovers in the win.
