Late Bates Rally Sinks Bowdoin Football in Home Finale

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team squandered an 11-point lead with under seven minutes to play, and missed a last-second field goal to lose to Bates, 25-24, in their final home game of the season Saturday night at Whittier Field.

The Polar Bears fall to 1-7 while the Bobcats improve to 2-6.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin carried a 10-0 lead into halftime thanks to a 29-yard field goal by Sean Mitchell and five-yard run touchdown by Andre Eden in the opening 30 minutes.
  • Bates scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, on a 57-yard pass from Brendan Costa to Christian Olivieri and 33-yard pass from Costa to Jackson Hayes to take a 13-10 lead midway through the period.
  • Bowdoin replied with a pair of scoring runs from Andre Eden from three and one yards out over the next six minutes, to grab a 24-13 lead with 9:09 to go.
  • Costa's scrambling and long passes continued to stymie the Bowdoin defense, as he cut Bowdoin's lead to 24-19 with a 22-yard strike to Hayes at 6:42, followed by a five-yard touchdown pass to Derek Marino with 3:08 on the clock to take a 25-24 lead.
  • Bowdoin drove 68 yards in 12 plays over the final three minutes, as Andrew Boel completed five passes and scrambled for 33 yards on the drive to guide the Polar Bears down to the Bates 11 with four seconds remaining. But a last second field goal sailed wide left, and the Bobcats walked away with the win.
