Women's Hoops Rallies in Fourth Quarter For Comeback Win Over MIT

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point, fourth quarter deficit to defeat MIT on Sunday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium, 54-50.

The Polar Bears, who are ranked eighth in the latest WBCA Division III poll, improve to 7-0 this season while the Engineers fall to 3-2.

Game Highlights
  • The game shaped up to be a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to get anything going offensively and combining for more than a turnover per minute during the game.
  • MIT jumped to a 10-0 lead out of the gate, before Bowdoin found its footing and outscored the Engineers 14-2 over the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 14-12 edge.
  • The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter until a late 6-0 run, sparked by consecutive three-pointers from Kamsi Nwogu and Sarah Berman, to take a 23-20 edge. Megan Tan buried a buzzer-beater to cut the MIT lead to 23-22 at the break.
  • Five points from Angie Choi in the third quarter upped MIT's lead to four points, 36-32, heading into the final period, and the Engineers started the fourth frame on a 6-0 run to open their largest lead of the game 42-32, with 8:57 to go.
  • MIT maintained their double-digit lead under the seven minute mark before Bowdoin slowly climbed back.
  • A 9-1 Bowdon run over a four-minute span cut the lead to two points, 45-43, following a Megan Tan lay-in with 3:30 to go.
  • After Nowgu answered with a layup, Annie Boasberg netted a three-pointer for the Polar Bears, trimming the lead to a single point, and then Bowdoin tied the game on a layup by Boasberg on the following possession, making it 48-48 with under two minutes to go.
  • The teams traded buckets on their next two possessions before Boasberg was fouled with 34 seconds remaining. After hitting a single free throw to give Bowdoin a 51-50 lead, MIT immediately turned the ball over on its ensuing inbounds pass, and Sydney Jones netted a pair of free throws to make it 53-50 Bowdoin with 26 seconds left.
  • MIT had two open looks at game-tying three-pointers, but both missed the mark. Sela Kay hit a late free throw to seal the win at 54-50.
