BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a scalding-hot second quarter to soundly defeat Smith College, 69-52, in a battle of nationally-ranked teams in the finals of the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.
The 13
th-ranked Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 5-0 this season while the 23
rd-ranked Pioneers fall to 4-1.
Game Highlights
- After a back-and-forth opening quarter that saw the visitors hold a slim 15-13 advantage, Bowdoin's offense caught fire in the second quarter.
- Sela Kay sparked a 32-point outburst with five three-pointers, and Bowdoin hit 8-of-9 from beyond the arc to open up a commanding 45-28 lead at halftime.
- Smith was able to stay within striking distance thanks to free throw shooting in the third quarter and slowly chipped away at Bowdoin's lead to start the fourth, coming as close as nine points, 56-47, with 5:50 to go in the game.
- Bowdoin immediately answered with a three-pointer from Tatum Angotti that keyed a 13-2 run that put the contest away.

- Bowdoin's bench was outstanding, outscoring Smith's 36-7 in the victory.
- Kay led the Polar Bears with 17 points while Annie Boasberg had 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the win.
- Smith was led by 18 points from Jessie Ruffner and 15 points from Katelyn Pickuncha.
- Bowdoin finished at 48% shooting for the game, and turned in a stellar defensive effort, holding Smith to 39% and forcing 22 Pioneer turnovers.
- The Polar Bears also assisted on 23 of their 27 field goals in the game.
- Mitchell defeated Worcester State, 57-54, in the consolation game of the tournament.
- Sela Kay (Bowdoin), Megan Tan (Bowdoin), Jessie Ruffer (Smith), Gigi LeMay (Worcester State) and Amina Wiley (Mitchell) comprised the All-Tournament team.
