Men's Basketball Loses Opener of WNEU Tourney To Wheaton

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team shot 57% from the field in an 89-78 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon on the opening day of the Western New England Tip-Off Tournament.
 
The Polar Bears fall for the first time all season and drop to 2-1 while the Lyons move to 3-3 overall.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin was able to stay close in the opening half, connecting on seven three-pointers to trail by a slim 36-35 margin.
  • Wheaton caught fire in the second half, hitting on 63% from the field and taking advantage of 19-20 from the free throw stripe to put the game on ice.
  • The Polar Bears closed to within four points (73-69) following a Col Hanin jumper with 4:07 to go, but Wheaton replied with a 10-0 run and held off a late Bowdoin flurry to win.

  • Michael Simonds had 21 points in the loss for Bowdoin while Afamdi Achufusi added 13.
  • James McGowan and Manav Randhawa had 10 apiece.
  • Wheaton was led by a game-high 29 points from Alex Carlisle and 25 from Aaron Williams.
  • The Lyons only hit a pair of three-pointers in the game, but held a 35-29 edge on the glass, scoring 48 points in the paint in the victory.
