Women's Hoops Pulls Away From USM to Win Santimano's Home Debut

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team outscored the University of Southern Maine 23-10 in the fourth quarter to win their home-opener on Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium, 74-60. 

The Polar Bears, ranked 13th in the latest Division III poll, improve to 3-0 on the season while the Huskies drop to 1-3 on the year. 

Game Highlights
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the opening half, but the Huskies carried a 29-28 edge into the break thanks to seven first half point each from Amy Fleming, Michelle Rowe, and Victoria Harris.
  • USM had extended their lead to as many as nine points late in the second quarter before a late Bowdoin surge trimmed the lead to a single point. 
  • Both teams found their offensive footing in the third period, as the squads combined for 44 points. Bowdoin took the lead back late in the period to take a 51-50 edge into the fourth. 
  • Tori Beck sparked the decisive fourth-quarter run for Bowdoin, scoring 11 points in the period, including a pair of three-pointers, to secure the victory for the Polar Bears.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin finished at 44% shooting for the game while USM connected on just 31% of their attempts from the field. Bowdoin also had a 46-35 edge in rebounding.
  • Beck scored a team-high 16 to lead four Polar Bears in double-figures, including Megan Tan, who had 14 points, seven boards and six assists. 
  • Jess Giorgio had 10 points while Sydney Jones had nine points and 11 rebounds. Callie Godfrey added 11 points off the bench for the Polar Bears.
  • USM was led by 18 points and ten rebounds from Victoria Harris.

  • Bowdoin will return to action on Friday evening, as they open the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament in Morrell Gymnasium with a 5:30 p.m. game against Worcester State.
