Records Fall as Football Loses High-Scoring Shootout With Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Bowdoin College football team came within a minute of knocking off unbeaten Wesleyan and saw a potential game-tying field goal sail wide at the buzzer, falling just short in a 38-35 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears, who totaled their most points November of 2015, fall to 0-4 on the season. The Cardinals improve to 4-0 on the year.

Game Highlights
  • In a classic back-and-forth contest, the Polar Bears led the Cardinals four times over the course of the afternoon, taking the lead off the bat on a 51-yard strike from Andrew Boel to Aise Pream early in the opening quarter.
  • After Wesleyan tied the game late in the first quarter, Boel again struck quickly on a 72-yard pass to Colton Fahey to regain the lead with five minutes to go before the half.
  • Wesleyan bounced back to score two touchdowns in the final 2:32 of the second quarter, however, to take a 21-14 lead at the break.
  • Bowdoin didn't falter, however, as Boel continued to be red hot, throwing to Austin Hiscoe for a 50-yard touchdown and then Fahey again for a 29-yard pass on the next Polar Bear drive to give the Polar Bears a 28-21 advantage.
  • Wesleyan covered 52 yards in seven plays to tie the game entering the fourth quarter at 28-28.
  • A Daniel Yoon field goal gave the Cardinals a 31-28 lead with 9:43 to go but another long pass from Boel to Fahey – this time for 50 yards – gave the Polar Bears a 35-31 edge with just 7:08 to go.
  • Wesleyan took the ensuing kickoff and covered 77 yards in 15 plays, converting on a 4th-and-1 deep in Bowdoin territory and scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a Charlie McPhee run from two yards out with 1:06 to go.
  • The Polar Bears quickly moved the ball downfield, setting up a potential game-tying kick from Jotham Casey with four seconds left, but the 37-yard attempt sailed wide at the buzzer as the Cardinals clung to victory.
By The Numbers
  • In his first career start, Boel burst onto the scene with a 21-30 passing performance for 410 yards and five touchdowns. The five touchdowns tied a school record set by Ricky Leclerc against Wesleyan in 2005, and his 401 passing yards were the second most in a game in school history, only to Oliver Kell's 472 against Wesleyan in 2009.
  • Colton Fahey's three touchdown receptions also tied a school record, set most recently by Nick Tomaino vs. Bates in 2006. His 221 yards receiving were the second most ever by a Bowdoin player, only to Nick Vailas' 230 against Colby in 2017.
  • Andre Eden rushed for 78 yards on seven carries for the Polar Bears as the Polar Bears racked up 514 yards of offense, their most since 2009 against Middlebury (515).
  • Defensively, Ty Jones-Garland and Dan Fiore had ten tackles apiece. Drew Ortiz had 2.5 tackles for loss
Up Next
