Bowdoin Football Never Trails, Snaps Losing Streak With Victory Over Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team never trailed in a 21-14 victory over Amherst College on Saturday at Whittier Field. The Polar Bears (1-4) snap a 14-game losing streak and defeat the Mammoths (3-2) for the first time since 2005.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin statistically dominated the opening half, but only had a touchdown to show for it. The Polar Bears marched into Amherst territory three times in the opening quarter but couldn't come away with points.
  • The Polar Bears broke through just before halftime following Amherst fumble caused by Koy Price and recovered by Myles Hugee. Bowdoin marched 77 yards in nine plays, scoring on an eight-yard strike from Andrew Boel to Colton Fahey 3:34 before halftime.
  • Following a scoreless third quarter that saw the teams trade long, scoreless possessions, Boel found Fahey again, streaking down the left sideline for a 68-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Polar Bears a 14-0 lead.
  • Amherst replied with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that came down to a 4th-and-13 from the Bowdoin 35. Quarterback Chad Peterson lofted a hail mary to the end zone where Turner Garland hauled it in to cut the Bowdoin lead to 14-7 with 10:58 to go.
  • Bowdoin pushed their lead back to two touchdowns on the very next possession as a long pass from Boel to Hiscoe put the Polar Bears into Amherst territory. Five plays later, Boel found Brendan King in the right flat. King caught the pass, stiff-armed a defender and sprinted 22 yards to paydirt for a 21-7 Bowdoin edge with 6:29 left.
  • Amherst was able to respond with a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown pass from Peterson to PJ Clementi with 2:40 to go.
  • Amherst kicked the ball long on the ensuing kickoff, and Bowdoin essentially ran out the clock from there, as Andre Eden covered 20 late yards, gaining a couple first downs to seal the win.
By The Numbers
  • Boel continued the impressive start to his career, going 22-28 for 307 yards passing and three touchdowns in the win. Fahey was his top target, catching five balls for 112 yards and two scores.
  • Andre Eden carried the ball 31 times for 105 yards, helping Bowdoin to a dominating 36:38-23:22 edge in time of possession for the contest.
