Tufts Scores 25 Unanswered Points to Rally Past Bowdoin in Football

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Tufts University football team captured its first win of the season, scoring 25 unanswered points to take a 25-13 win over Bowdoin at Whittier Field on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos move to 1-5 on the season while the Polar Bears drop to 1-5.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin controlled most of the first half, driving into Tufts territory three times in the opening quarter, but could only cash in for one touchdown. The Polar Bears took advantage of good field position following a Jumbos punt to cover 39 yards in eight plays, scoring on a beautiful fade pass from Andrew Boel to Bo Millet in the back left corner of the end zone.
  • The Polar Bears led 7-0 for the entire opening half until Tufts' final possession of the second quarter, when the Jumbos marched 55 yards in nine plays to score on a three-yard plunge by Tyler Johnson with 28 seconds left in the period to make it 7-7 at halftime.
  • Tufts then took the opening kickoff of the second half and again marched straight down the field, covering 75 yards on six plays, with the big strike coming on a 29-yard pass from Michael Berluti to Philip Lutz, setting up another three-yard touchdown score by Johnson to give Tufts a 13-7 edge.
  • After the teams traded scoreless possessions, a big punt return by Tufts' Aundre Smith set the Jumbos up at the Bowdoin 22 late in the third quarter. Four plays later Berluti found Lutz from 12 yards out to give the visitors a 19-7 edge entering the fourth quarter.
  • Bowdoin twice drove inside the Tufts 20, on back-to-back possessions, but turned the ball over on downs before Tufts capped their 18-0 scoring run on a 20-yard bootleg touchdown run by Berluti with three minutes remaining.
  • Bowdoin scored a late touchdown on a one-yard scoring run by Brendan King to close the final gap to 25-13.
By The Numbers
  • Michael Berluti went 17-28 for 161 yards passing to lead the Jumbos, who got 107 yards receiving from Philip Lutz.
  • Bowdoin's Andre Eden rushed for 114 yards on 23 carries for the Polar Bears, but the Tufts defense was able to bottle up Bowdoin's potent passing attack, holding Andrew Boel to just 163 yards passing.
  • Bowdoin had four sacks on the day as Ty Jones-Garland led the team with ten tackles, a sack and 2.5 stops for a loss.
