Bowdoin Sweeps Middlebury in Battle of NESCAC Leaders

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College volleyball team dispatched Middlebury in three sets, 3-0, to win a crucial New England Small College Athletic Conference battle on Senior Night in Morrell Gymnasium Friday evening.
 
The Polar Bears move to 13-4 (6-1 NESCAC) while the Panthers drop their second NESCAC match of the year and fall to 15-2 (5-2).
 
Match Highlights
  • In three tightly-contested sets, the Polar Bears came away with identical 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 set wins.
  • The first set saw the teams tied at 21 apiece following a kill by Middlebury's Corley Doyle. But Bowdoin rolled off four straight points to end it, highlighted by a go-ahead kill from Jaida Hodge Adams to take the opener.
  • Bowdoin took control of the second set, using a 6-0 run on Ella Haugen's serve to open up a 12-7 lead midway through. The Panthers could get no closer than three points the rest of the way as late kills by Sophia Pahl and Hawkins sealed the win and a 2-0 advantage.
  • The third set featured eight tie scores in the early going before a 6-1 Bowdoin surge, sparked by two more kills from Hawkins, gave the Polar Bears a 21-16 edge. Middlebury clawed back to within three points, at 24-21, but Pahl ended it with a kill to clinch the victory.
By The Numbers
  • Sophia Pahl finished with 14 kills and 15 digs in the win for Bowdoin while Cori Gray added 11 kills, six blocks and an ace.
  • Ella Haugen dished out 36 assists and had a team-high 17 digs. Jaida Hodge-Adams (11 kills, 14 digs) and Allyson Hawkins (10 kills, 13 digs) also had double-doubles for Bowdoin.
  • Middlebury was led by 11 kills from Maggie Wise, who also led the team with 16 digs.
