Amherst Pins 5-2 Setback on Men's Ice Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin men's hockey team succumbed to a late Amherst rally and fell 5-2 on Saturday evening.

The Polar Bears drop to 9-10-1 (5-8-1 NESCAC), while the Mammoths earn the series split and sit at 7-9-4 (5-6-3 NESCAC).

Game Highlights

  • The Polar Bears broke through late in the first. Albert Washco won the puck in the left corner and fed Joe Alexander at the near dot. Alexander slipped a pass to Bradley Ingersoll at the far post for a one-timer.
  • With 5:54 remaining in the second, Amherst found an equalizer. Connor Merrill redirected a hard pass from Mitchell Shults to the top right corner.
  • Bowdoin responded and regained the lead two minutes later. Michael Brown stripped the puck off an Amherst defender in the neutral zone and skated into a two-on-one with Ethan Kimball. Brown found Kimball at the far post for a one-timer.
  • With just 31 seconds remaining in the period, Amherst found the back of the net. On a five-on-three power play, Patrick Daly put away a rebound.
  • Amherst scored twice in the opening two minutes of the third period to seal the win and added an empty-net goal in the final minutes.

By the Numbers

  • Alex Zafonte made 23 stops for Bowdoin.
  • Giancarlo Ventre made 37 saves for Amherst.
  • Both teams had eight power play opportunities. Amherst converted on the power play once, while Bowdoin was unsuccessful.
