Polar Bears Vanquish Vikings in Women's Hockey

SALEM, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's hockey team heads into its bye weekend with a 4-1 non-conference win against Salem State on Tuesday. 

The Polar Bears improve to 7-7-3 overall. The Vikings drop to 3-14-1.

Game Highlights

  • Julia Surgenor put the Polar Bears on the board 5:29 into the game. Angelina Joyce controlled the puck behind the net and fed Surgenor out front for a backhander through the goalie's pads.
  • Bowdoin scored a power play goal midway through the second to take a 2-0 lead. Nell Fusco buried a shot from the left point.
  • Katie Leininger added another tally to the board three minutes later, sending the puck from the outside edge of the right circle on pads. Dana Smullen got a piece of the puck, but could not stop it before crossing the goal line.
  • Elly Whitmore had another power play goal for the Polar Bears with less than three minutes remaining in the frame. Izzi Stoddard fired a shot from the high slot and Whitmore finished it on the right post.
  • Rose Sullivan spoiled the shutout with a goal five minutes into the third. Sullivan received a long feed along the right boards behind Bowdoin's defense and skated in for a one-on-goal.

By the Numbers

  • Madeline Carlson made 14 stops in net for Bowdoin.
  • Smullen had 29 saves for Salem State.
  • Bowdoin went 2-for-4 on the power play.
  • The Vikings were 0-for-2 with the extra skater.

  • The Polar Bears are off this weekend and return to action at home on February 7 against Amherst.
