Men's Swimming and Diving Ends Day One of NESCAC Championships in Fifth

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's swimming and diving team sits in fifth place at the conclusion of day one of the 2018 NESCAC Championships.

The Polar Bears have 408 points, just 7.5 behind Connecticut College's 415.5.

Meet Highlights

  • Three school records fell on day one. In prelims of the 200 freestyle relay Julian Abaldo, Karl SarierMichael O'Neal, and Will Hutchinson set a school record mark of 1:23.20. In finals, Abaldo, Sarier, Logan House, and Hutchinson lowered that mark with a 1:22.61. The B relay team of Jacob Baltaytis, Michael Netto, Andrew Macdonald, and O'Neal finished 15th overall (4th among B relays) in 1:25.86.
  • Junior Daniel Williams raced to a 4:38.26 500 freestyle in prelims, setting a new school record. In finals he touched in 4:38.31 for 12th overall.
  • Sarier won the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 1:50.07. First-year teammate Geoff Chen finished sixth in 1:53.03. Junior Stephen Pastoriza finished 13th with a 1:54.96 while sophomore Cameron Chertavian was 23rd in 1:56.51.
  • Junior Mitchell Ryan won one meter diving with 480.95 points. First-year Irfan Dotani was 11th with a score of 278.20.
  • Netto and Tirone finished first and second in the consolation final of the 50 breaststroke. Their times of 26.12, and 26.46, respectively, were ninth and tenth. 
  • Abaldo finished eighth in the 50 butterfly in 22.73, while teammates House (23.13), Baltaytis (23.28), and O'Neal (23.88) were 13th, 16th, and 22nd.
  • Hutchinson finished fifth in the 50 freestyle in 20.77 while Abaldo was eighth in 21.05, after swimming a 20.86 in prelims. O'Neal added another 22nd with his 21.99.
  • The session ended with a school record 400 medley relay. Hutchinson swam the backstroke leg in 51.88, just .01 shy of the school record. He was followed by Tirone, Abaldo, and Sarier as the quartet finished fifth in 3:23.00. The B squad of McClure Brower (who recorded a personal best 53.05), Netto, House, and Chen finished 16th overall with a 3:27.68.
