Double Overtime Goal Caps Field Hockey Win Against Williams

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Kara Finnerty tipped an Elizabeth Bennewitz shot in double overtime to cap a back and forth field hockey game between Bowdoin and Williams on Sunday afternoon, 3-2, for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) traded goals with the Ephs (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) and took their only lead of the game off the double overtime tally.

Game Highlights

  • Williams struck first 13:42 into the opening half. Meredith Wright drew the defense towards the right end line and centered a pass to Alex Bennett. Bennett cleanly swept the ball to the far corner for a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Polar Bears answered on a penalty corner seven minutes later. Elle Brine inserted to Bennewitz who fired off a shot from the top of the circle.
  • Bennett scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the second half to regain the lead for Williams. Bennett corralled the ball inside the circle and drew out Maddie Ferrucci, slipping the ball between the goalie's pads for a 2-1 edge.
  • Again, Bowdoin responded with an equalizer two minutes later. While Bennewitz's initial shot was denied, the rebound kicked back out to the top and she lined up another bid. As the ball traveled through the circle, Finnerty redirected for her first goal of the game
  • The two teams traded opportunities in the first overtime, with Williams thwarting several breakaway runs by Bowdoin. Emma Santucci twice denied high pressure two-on- goals from Finnerty and Tala Glass.
  • Santucci made a point blank save on a shot by Abby Bashaw in the first overtime, and denied Juliana Fiore in the second OT. Fiore connected with a bouncing ball and sent a line drive towards net that Santucci made a blocker save to deny.
  • Bowdoin converted on its only penalty corner of overtime to secure the win. Brine inserted to Bennewitz at the top, who fired a shot towards net. Finnerty stepped in and deflected the ball past Santucci to end the game 2:26 into the second overtime frame.
