Field Hockey Falls to Top-Ranked Tufts in Regular-Season Finale

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College field hockey team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday evening, falling 1-0 to unbeaten Tufts University in a battle between the top-ranked Jumbos and third-ranked Polar Bears in the NCAA Division III NPI rankings. Bowdoin finishes the regular season with a 12-3 record (7-3 NESCAC), while Tufts completes a perfect regular season at 15-0 (10-0 NESCAC). The Polar Bears will be the third seed for the upcoming NESCAC Championship and will host sixth-seeded Wesleyan in a conference quarterfinal game on Saturday, October 31, at noon at Ryan Field.

Game Highlights
  • Tufts controlled much of the possession in the opening half, but Bowdoin's defense and goalkeeper Eva Filipponi kept the Jumbos off the scoreboard despite a 9-0 disadvantage in shots through the first 30 minutes.
  • Filipponi made five saves in the second quarter alone, including several during a flurry of Tufts opportunities early in the period, sending the teams into halftime scoreless.
  • Bowdoin generated its first offensive chances in the third quarter, with Hannah Balmelli sending a shot wide before Emily Ferguson forced a save by Tufts goalkeeper Isabel Ginns late in the period.
  • The Jumbos finally broke through just 1:33 into the fourth quarter, as Eleanor Helm converted following a penalty corner opportunity to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
  • Bowdoin continued to battle in the closing minutes, earning a penalty corner with under three minutes remaining before Ferguson put a final shot on goal with just two seconds left, but Ginns made the save to preserve the shutout.
