Softball Extends Streak With Conference Victory Over Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Bowdoin softball team continued to roll as it picked up its sixth consecutive victory in a 9-3 win at Trinity on Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 17-6 (2-1 NESCAC) on the season and collected five victories in the span of three days in a productive weekend. Sunday's game concluded the three-game series between Bowdoin and Trinity (12-9, 4-2 NESCAC), with the Polar Bears owning a 2-1 advantage. 

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With Ali Miller and Emily Griffin on base at the top of the lineup, Marisa O'Toole drilled a two-run triple. Claire McCarthy tagged an RBI single to drive in O'Toole before the Bantams could find a third out.
  • Trinity responded in the bottom half of the inning as Courtney Erickson grounded out and drove in Erica Merullo.
  • The Polar Bears exploded for four more runs in the third, beginning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Allison Rutz and Samantha Valdivia. Lauren O'Shea followed suite with a double that drove in Valdivia. Miller drove in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • In the top of the fourth, O'Toole added to the lead with a solo homer to left.
  • Meaghan Race chipped away at the deficit for Trinity, tagging an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Michelle Treglia did the same in the following inning.
  • Lauren Nguyen capped the day's scoring as she came home on a wild pitch in the seventh.

By the Numbers

  • Griffin went the distance, pitching all seven innings, and allowed eight hits and three runs in the win. Griffin fanned a pair of batters and walked one.
  • Rachael Smith suffered the loss in the circle for Trinity, lasting 2.1 innings and allowing six hits.
  • O'Toole went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, a triple, and a homerun. Valdivia tallied two doubles. Rutz and O'Shea both recorded extra-base hits as well. Miller and Jordan Gowdy each had a stolen base.
