Softball Tops Tufts For 13th Straight Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team put together timely hitting and steady fielding to capture a key 4-3 NESCAC victory over visiting Tufts on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (24-6, 6-1 NESCAC) tie the school record with their 13th consecutive win, a mark set by the program in 2013. The Jumbos (16-12, 4-4 NESCAC) led twice during the game,

Game Highlights

  • Tufts jumped out to a quick two run lead in the top of the first inning.  With runners on second and third, Cassie Ruscz singled to center and drove in Samantha Siciliano. Maggie Hoffman advanced to third on Ruscz's single and later scored when Ruscz drew the throw at second for a stolen base attempt.
  • Bowdoin evened the game in the bottom of the third as Caroline Rice tagged a two-out bases loaded single to left, driving in Marisa O'Toole and Ali Miller.
  • The Jumbos regained the lead in their following at bat. Emily Serata drilled a double down the leftfield line, driving in a run.
  • The Polar Bears again evened the game, this time off a Jordan Gowdy double to left.
  • O'Toole gave Bowdoin its only lead of the game in the sixth, singling to shallow center and allowing Emily Griffin to come around from second. Griffin then pitched a one, two, three top of the seventh to secure the win.

By the Numbers

  • Griffin pitched all seven innings for Bowdoin and allowed seven hits with as many strikeouts. The senior walked a pair of batters.
  • Raina Galbiati started the game for Tufts and pitched three innings, allowing three runs. Galbiati recorded two K's while walking three and allowing five hits. Gillian O'Connor pitched the final three innings and allowed four hits and one run.
  • Summer Horowitz paced the Jumbos, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Ruscz went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Griffin went 2-for-4 for Bowdoin. Rice was the only player for either team to drive in multiple runs.

Up Next

  • The two teams return to Pickard Field tomorrow at noon to play a doubleheader and complete the series.
