Polar Bears Produce Tuesday Softball Sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team tallied double digit hit totals in both Tuesday morning victories as the Polar Bears defeated Hope 5-1 before downing Calvin 12-4.

The Polar Bears are 7-5 following the team's second two-win day of the season. Hope suffered just its second setback of the year (5-2) while Calvin sits at 6-4.

Game One Highlights

  • Bowdoin found its offensive footing in the top of the third as consecutive singles from Natalie Edwards, Lauren O'Shea, and Ali Miller loaded the bases. Jordan Gowdy drove in Edwards with a bases loaded single to center. Caroline Rice advanced Miller across home plate as she grounded out to second.
  • The Polar Bears put three more runs on the board in the fourth as a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Miller launched into center. Gowdy followed up with a two-run single.
  • Hope spoiled the shutout with a seventh inning single, driving in a runner from third.
  • Gowdy went 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace Bowdoin.
  • Emily Griffin earned the win with six strikeouts and as many hits allowed. The senior walked a pair.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bowdoin broke through in the bottom of the second. Allison Rutz singled to center in the leadoff spot and Claire McCarthy quickly homered to left for the 2-0 lead.
  • The Knights responded with four runs in their following at-bat. Rachel Borden and Anna Germant both tallied RBI singles. Jessica Brasser and Kaley Frank both drove in runs with sacrifice flies to center.
  • This time the Polar Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own to regain the lead. Rutz, Marisa O'Toole, and Samantha Valdivia all recorded run producing singles. Rice reached second with an early double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
  • Bowdoin tacked on five more runs in the fifth inning, sparked by a three-run homer off the bat of O'Toole. Miller drove in her first run of the game as she singled to center and Gowdy chipped a base hit to second, allowing Miller to score.
  • O'Toole ended the game with a sixth inning double to left that drove in the final run for Bowdoin.
  • Rice and Edwards both tallied doubles in the game. O'Toole and McCarthy were each a triple away from completing the cycle. O'Toole led the way with five RBI while going 4-for-4 at the plate.
  • Rutz earned the win in the circle with eight hits and four runs allowed. The first-year struck out two. Samantha Roy pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit with three K's.
