Women's Rugby Cruises Past Middlebury On Senior Day

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team celebrated Senior Day with a dominating 50-12 win over Middlebury College on Saturday at Pickard Field.

Bowdoin finishes the regular season with a 7-1 record and will learn its postseason assignment early next week.

Match Highlights

  • The four seniors honored pregame were Juliette Dankens, Julianna Lewis, Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik and Kendall Schutzer.
  • Leading the defense with ten tackles was Jackie Jaques, while fellow teammates Satya Kent, Schutzer and D'Angelo added eight of their own.
  • Winger Maddie Squibb opened the scoring after 15 minutes of play with a breakaway run down the left sideline and centering the try.  Conversion kick was good by Kendall Schutzer, for a Bowdoin 7 - 0 lead.
  • Liz D'Angelo, with a fine tactical kicking game on the day, looped her teammate on a nice give-and-go to create an overlap and found the end zone for a 12-0 lead.
  • After Middlebury cut the lead to 12-7, flanker Jackie Jaques supported a #8 pick up, took the offload pass and sprinted through the defense to score a try, converted by D'Angelo, giving the Polar Bears a 19-7 lead at the break.
  • Two minutes into the second half, off a hard run by co-captain Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik, D'Angelo struck again off a beautiful open field play of passes from Gomezgil to Satya Kent, to Jaques to D'Angelo for the try, who converted her own score.
  • Gomezgil found the try line eight minutes later with a short hard run, fending defenders from 12 meters out.
  • Co-captain Kendall Schutzer added two more tries in the second half, one of them a beautifully executed chip kick and chase.  From a ruck 15 meters in front of the goalposts, Schutzer kicked a perfect box kick,, chased and challenged the Middlebury fullback in her attempt to field the ball, and Schutzer took the ball off the bounce and touched it down for her third try of the game.
  • New winger Rhianna Patel had a good offensive outing, assisting on a first-half try with a well-placed kick down field, chasing D'Angelo's deep kicks to keep the Panthers under pressure, and scoring the final try of the game off a strong backline passing play with an assist from Gardenia Pimentel
