Walkoff Single by O'Shea Gives Softball First NESCAC Victory of 2016

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Lauren O'Shea hit a walk off single in the eighth inning to cap a Bowdoin softball comeback against Bates in a 4-3 series opener.

The Polar Bears (10-7-1, 1-1 NESCAC) rallied in the sixth inning after the Bobcats (0-14, 0-2 NESCAC) took a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third after Caroline Rice tagged a single up the middle, driving in O'Shea.
  • Bates responded with a two-run fourth to take the lead. Maddie Inlow doubled to left and drove in Karen Lockhart who opened the inning with a triple into right.
  • Tori Fitzgerald put the ball in play after the Bobcats loaded the bases, allowing Inlow to score from third on the fielder's choice.
  • Bates pushed one more run across the plate in the following inning as a bases-loaded walk for Madison Fox sent Andrea Russo home.
  • Katie Gately and Claire McCarthy reached on back-to-back singles in the bottom of the sixth. Marisa O'Toole followed with a bases-clearing triple that drove in the pair.
  • Neither team could end the game in regulation as Lockhart denied a homerun bid from Samantha Valdivia in the seventh at straight away center. Julia Geaumont retired Bates in order to begin the eighth.
  • Bowdoin loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. With one out on the board, O'Shea dropped a ball into shallow left field that allowed O'Toole to score from third.

By the Numbers

  • Emily Griffin started in the circle for Bowdoin and went six complete innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. The junior allowed four hits and three runs.
  • Geaumont closed out the game for Bowdoin with two innings of work and a pair of strikeouts.
  • Kylie Martin pitched put in a complete game performance with a pair of strikeouts and 12 hits.
  • O'Toole led both teams with two RBI's.
  • Rice went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI.
  • Russo paced Bates going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.
