Softball Shuts Out Husson And Produces 19 Runs in Sunday Series

BANGOR, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team's offense exploded for 19 runs in a pair of shutout victories over host Husson University of Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (18-13-2) captured an 8-0 five-inning win in game one and followed up with an 11-0 victory over Husson (11-23) in game two. The Polar Bears are now 4-0 on the weekend after sweeping Brandeis on Saturday.

Game One Highlights

  • Bowdoin scored a pair of runs in the first inning off two Husson errors. Julia Geaumont put the ball in play, resulting in a Claire McCarthy run, and Katie Gately's chop to third allowed Caroline Rice to score.
  • McCarthy tagged an RBI doubled in the second to drive in Emma Stevens. Caroline Rice followed up with a single through the left side that scored McCarthy.
  • Natalie Edwards hit her team's second RBI double of the day down the left field line, allowing Gately to score in the third. Marisa O'Toole followed with a two-run homer to right center that put Bowdoin ahead 7-0.
  • O'Toole's RBI double in the fourth gave the Polar Bears the eight run spread required to end the game in five innings.
  • Geaumont pitched all five innings and allowed four hits and no runs. The senior struck out five batters and walked one.
  • Alannah Healy suffered the loss for Husson, giving up seven runs on as many hits.
  • McCarthy went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, RBI, and two runs. O'Toole led the team with three RBIs off a double and homer. 

Game Two Highlights

  • Jordan Gowdy led off for Bowdoin with a single and quickly scored on a triple to left by McCarthy. Rice drove in McCarthy with a single up the middle.
  • Bowdoin scored three more runs in the second, beginning with an RBI double from Lauren O'Shea. Jordan Gowdy followed with an RBI groundout, driving in Katie Kaufman. Rice concluded the inning's scoring with a double to left center.
  • O'Toole hit a solo homerun to left field in the third, putting Bowdoin up 6-0.
  • Geaumont launched a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the fourth that drove in McCarthy for the team's seventh run. O'Toole drove in another run for the Polar Bears with a single through the left side, scoring Ali Miller. Gately rounded out the inning with a three-run homer to left field.
  • Samantha Roy earned the win for Bowdoin with five innings of work and four hits allowed. Roy struck out nine and walked one.
  • Courtney McIntyre suffered the loss for the Eagles with 3.1 innings of work and 14 hits allowed.
  • Rice went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a double. O'Toole, McCarthy, and O'Shea were all 2-for-3.
