Late Inning Rallies Give Softball Unbeaten Day Against Southern Maine

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team mounted two successful rallies against the University of Southern Maine to take a 5-4 victory in game one and force a 5-5 tie in game two.

The Polar Bears (13-9-2) scored three runs in the final inning of both games to deny the Huskies (14-7-1) a win.

Game One Highlights

  • Southern Maine scored early as a bases-loaded Shelby Obert walk pushed Mary Caron across the plate in the top of the first.
  • Bowdoin responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Ali Miller stole third and advanced home on a misthrow by the catcher. Emma Stevens scored shortly after as Claire McCarthy put the ball in play.
  • Courtney Davis came home in the top of the third to even the game with Shelby Obert taking first on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
  • Taylor Lux gave the Huskies the lead in the fourth with an RBI triple and Davis added to the tally with an RBI single to right in the sixth.
  • Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, McCarthy sparked a two-out rally with a double that drove in Jordan Gowdy. Samantha Valdivia tagged a walk-off single that drove a pair of runs for the 5-4 victory.
  • Sammi Goode allowed six hits with as many strikeouts in the circle for USM.
  • Julia Geaumont allowed seven hits in as many innings of work with six strikeouts.

Game Two Highlights

  • The Huskies jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first, beginning with an RBI by Danni Humphry. Brooke Cross drove in a run on the following play off a single.
  • The Polar Bears tied the game in the bottom of the third, beginning with a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Miller. Caroline Rice followed with an RBI double.
  • Southern Maine put three runs up in the fifth before Bowdoin could force the final out. Davis tallied an RBI single and Obert again earned the bases-loaded walk to push across another run. The Huskies final run came as Ally Pillar chopped a shot to first that was misplayed, allowing the run to score.
  • With light fading, Gowdy and Miller tallied back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Rice and Geaumont hit consecutive doubles to tie the game, with Rice driving in one run and Geaumont a pair.
  • The game was called after the fifth inning due to darkness.
  • Emily Griffin pitched all five innings for Bowdoin while allowing seven hits with four strikeouts.
  • Katelyn Tucker started the game for USM and went four innings with seven hits and a K. Amber Kelly pitched one complete inning, allowing two hits.
