Bowdoin Bats Come Alive in Two Offense Heavy Wins for Softball

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team jumped out to an early lead and held off Salve Regina 7-1 before coming from behind to defeat Benedictine (Ill.) 7-6 on Sunday.

The Polar Bears return to the win column with back-to-back victories to improve to 5-3. Salve Regina sits at 1-2 after two days of action and Benedictine drops to 4-2.

Game One Highlights

  • Bowdoin jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Julia Geaumont hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly, driving in a pair of runs.
  • Samantha Valdivia drove in a run in the following inning off a single to center. Claire McCarthy crossed the plate soon after on a passed ball.
  • Caroline Rice tagged a one-out double to right field that drove in two runs midway through the third. Jordan Gowdy drove in the Polar Bears seventh run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Salve Regina spoiled the shutout with the game's final run, coming in the fifth inning.
  • Geaumont went seven innings in the circle for Bowdoin, allowing six hits with no walks. The senior tallied four strikeouts.

Game Two Highlights

  • Benedictine pushed five runs across the plate in the second.  The Eagles got on the board with a two-run double off the bat of Katie Snyder.
  • Snyder eventually scored on an RBI single by Breanna Sobotka and Shannon Fritsche drove in another run for the Eagles for a 4-0 lead. Benedictine put one more run on the board before Bowdoin could record a third out.
  • Trailing 5-0, the Polar Bears put together a six run second inning. Rice started the rally with a leadoff homer to center field.
  • Gowdy drove in a second run and a Katie Gately walk cut the Eagles lead to two. Trailing 5-3, Geaumont hit an RBI single to right. Rice quickly followed with a two run double to give the Polar Bears a 6-5 lead.
  • Gowdy added another RBI double in the bottom of the following inning to conclude Bowdoin's scoring for the day.
  • Benedictine added one more run in the fourth but was unable to complete a comeback.
  • Emily Griffin pitched all seven innings for Bowdoin, allowing only one earned run. Griffin tallied eight strikeouts and four walks.
