Polar Bears Split Thursday Series Against Pair of Regional Opponents

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team rebounded from an opening loss against Keene State with an 11-5 win over Western New England on Thursday morning.

The Polar Bears (3-1) were unable to come back from a three-run third against Keene State (4-7) in a 4-2 final, but Bowdoin put up an 11-5 victory against Western New England to remain above .500.

Game One Highlights

  • Bowdoin got on the scoreboard first, capitalizing on a fielding error to go up 1-0 in the top of the third.
  • Morgan Fallon tallied the first RBI of the game for either team in the bottom of the inning. Olivia Indorf added to the Owls lead with a double to center that pushed another runner across the plate. Shae Crosby rounded out the inning with a groundout to short that allowed a runner to score from third.
  • The Owls tacked on a fourth run in the sixth off an RBI single to left field by Kristin Boduch.
  • Emily Griffin doubled Bowdoin's run tally as she put the ball in play, allowing Julia Geaumont to score.
  • Geaumont ended the day with two doubles and Katie Gately tallied a triple.
  • Griffin pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs off seven hits. Mariah Crisp struck out nine Bowdoin batters to earn the win for Keene State.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bowdoin found its offensive footing in the second game, pushing three runs across the plate in the top of the second. Griffin and Jordan Gowdy each tallied RBI singles, while Lauren O'Shea sent a sacrifice fly to right to drive in a run of her own.
  • Western New England responded in the bottom of the inning after a bases loaded walk put one run on the board and a ground out to short drove in another.
  • The Polar Bears answered with four runs in the third. Samantha Valdivia and Griffin each singled to the outfield to drive in runs. Gowdy tagged a two-run single to right that extended Bowdoin's lead to 7-2.
  • Gately doubled to left in the following inning drive in Ali Miller.
  • The Golden Bears scored a pair in the bottom half of the fourth off a double by Lindsay Williams and another run in the following inning off the bat of Jenn Luba.
  • Bowdoin produced three runs in the top of the seventh to end the day. O'Shea, Gowdy, and Marisa O'Toole all collected an RBI to conclude the game.
  • Geaumont earned the win in the circle for Bowdoin, pitching six innings before Samantha Roy closed out the seventh.
