Softball Opens Season with Back-to-Back Wednesday Wins

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team opened its 2016 season with a pair of wins on Wednesday against Plymouth State and McDaniel.

The Polar Bears are 2-0 after opening the day with a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State (4-5) and a 4-0 shutout against McDaniel (4-8).

Game One Highlights

  • Julia Geaumont tallied the season's first RBI, scoring Jordan Gowdy with a single in the bottom of the first.
  • Plymouth State responded with a pair of unearned runs in the following inning, capitalizing on a Bowdoin error.
  • The Polar Bears regained the lead in the fourth as Claire McCarthy scored from second off a ball put in play by Emma Stevens.
  • Katie Gately tallied two RBI in the following inning with a single to left. The senior drove in Caroline Rice and Marisa O'Toole.
  • Emily Griffin earned the win in the circle for Bowdoin, going seven innings while allowing just four hits. Griffin struck out a pair of batters and walked three.

Game Two Highlights

  • Neither team sent more than four batters to the plate through the first four innings of play between McDaniel and Bowdoin.
  • The Polar Bears broke through in the top of the fifth as Samantha Valdivia tagged an RBI double to center that scored Ali Miller.
  • McDaniel advanced a runner to third with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth, but Geaumont forced a ground out to end the inning.
  • Lauren O'Shea reached second with a leadoff double and moved to third as Caroline Rice singled up the middle. Gately's single to left center drove in the pair and extended Bowdoin's lead.
  • O'Toole singled through the right side to collect her first hit of the game and drive in the Polar Bears' fourth run in the top of the seventh.
  • Geaumont put in seven innings of work for Bowdoin and tallied five strikeouts while allowing as many hits. The senior walked a lone batter.
