Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team couldn't overcome 26% shooting from the field as the University of Rochester held off a late Polar Bear rally to survive, 60-53, in the Third Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday evening at Amherst College.
The Yellowjackets improve to 23-5 and advance to the Elite Eight tomorrow evening. The Polar Bears finish another fantastic season with a record of 22-7.
Game Highlights
- Rochester came out firing and put the Polar Bears in an early hole. Lauren Deming had nine first-quarter points as the Yellowjackets opened up a 19-12 lead late in the frame
- Bowdoin's Rachel Norton banked home a three-pointer before the buzzer to trim the lead to 19-15 after ten minutes
- The Yellowjackets took command early in the second quarter, scoring the first 12 points of the period to increase their lead to 31-15 following a Kelsey Hurley layup at the five minute mark
- In all, Rochester outscored Bowdoin 16-4 in the quarter as the Polar Bears connected on just 2-16 from the field
- Bowdoin came out more composed in the third period and chipped away at the Rochester lead, getting a pair of three-pointers from Marle Curle and Lauren Petit to trim the lead into single digits on two occasions
- A late Yellowjacket push was able to nudge the lead back into double figures, 46-35 heading into the fourth
- Rochester still held a ten point lead, 49-39, with seven minutes to play before the Polar Bears made their final run
- Shannon Brady scored four points in a quick 6-0 spurt that cut the lead to 49-45 with 2:17 to go
- Bowdoin had two chances to cut into the lead further, but a turnover gave the ball back to Rochester and Sarah Kaminsky hit a back-breaking three-pointer to make it 52-45 with 1:28 to go
- Bowdoin wouldn't go away, but could get no closer than five points as Rochester hit nine free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice
By The Numbers
- In her final collegiate contest, Bowdoin senior Shannon Brady scored a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds. Brady finishes a sparkling career with 1,471 points (fourth all-time at Bowdoin), 717 rebounds (seventh) and 184 blocks (second)
- Marle Curle scored 17 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists and two steals
- The rest of the Polar Bears scored just 14 points, however, as Bowdoin connected on 26.7% of their shots despite taking 20 more shots than Rochester
- Rochester hit on 36% of their attempts, including 8-20 (40%) from three-point range. Kayla Kibling led the Yellowjackets with 16 points, including a trio of three-pointers
