Football Falls In Season Finale At Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College football team scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Bowdoin in a 32-16 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Mules defeat Bowdoin for just the third time in the last 11 meetings between the schools dating back to 2006 and finishes the season with a record of 3-5. The Polar Bears drop to 0-8, recording their first winless season since 2003.

Game Highlights

  • John Baron, who went 4-4 on field goals for the day, gave the Mules a 6-0 lead on a pair of first quarter field goals.
  • The Mules increased their lead in the second quarter when Gabe Harrington, returning from a week one injury, scampered 29 yards for a touchdown to give Colby a 13-0 edge early in the period.
  • Bowdoin was able to trim the halftime lead to 13-3 on a 40-yard field goal by Andrew Sisti, his sixth field of the season.
  • The Polar Bears drew closer late in the third quarter, posting a five-play, 73-yard drive that was highlighted by a 55-yard rush by Christopher Markisz that put Bowdoin inside the Colby 10. Two plays later Nate Richam cashed in to make it 13-10.
  • Colby answered with a lengthy drive before settling for another Baron field goal to make it 16-10 with 14:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • After the teams traded possessions, Colby stuffed Bowdoin on a fourth-and-two from their own 38 and then gave the ball to Jabari Hurdle-Price four straight times, with the final play being a one-yard touchdown plunge that make it 23-10 Mules with 6:48 to go.
  • After a Bowdoin three-and-out, Colby took over at the 50 and Hurdle-Price cut through the Polar Bear defense for a back-breaking touchdown run that increased the lead to 29-10 with 5:34 on the clock.
  • Baron added a field goal to make it 32-10 before Bowdoin scored on their final drive of the season, a nine-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a Tim Drakeley touchdown pass to Liam Ford.

By The Numbers

  • For the first time this season, Bowdoin out-gained an opponent, posting 342 yards of total offense to 331 for Colby while the Polar Bears posted 18 first downs compared to 12 for the Mules.
  • Liam Ford caught a career-high 11 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown while Bowdoin had a pair of solid performers on the ground with Richam (112 yards) and Markisz (91 yards).
  • Henry Little and Austin Stern led Bowdoin with five tackles apiece
  • Hurdle-Price led Colby with 161 yards rushing
  • Bowdoin committed two turnovers to none for Colby and allowed four sacks on the afternoon.
