Softball Ends Season in NESCAC Tournament Setback To Middlebury

Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Bowdoin College softball team saw its season come to an end in a 2-0 loss to Middlebury at the NESCAC Tournament hosted by Tufts on Saturday.

The Polar Bears, who were eliminated by the Panthers for the second-straight season, finish a fantastic year with a record of 27-15, reaching 20 wins for a school-record ninth consecutive campaign. Middlebury (20-10) advances to play in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon against either Williams or Tufts.

Middlebury pitchers Allison Quigley and Neve Stearns combined to keep the potent Bowdoin offense off the scoreboard. Quigley pitched six innings allowing five hits and a walk with five strike outs to pick up her 13th win of the season. Stearns picked up her third save by recording three outs in the seventh to finish the victory.

The Panthers scored scored single runs in the fifth and sixth. Sophomore SS Siobhan O'Sullivan doubled down the left field line to score Carlyn Vachow in the fifth. Heads up base running by Jackie Stern led to the second Panther run in the sixth. After drawing a one-out walk and moving to second on a ground out, Stern scored on a Bowdoin infield error.

Stern then came up big defensively for the Panthers in the seventh. With a runner on base, she caught a well-struck ball by Bowdoin's Lauren O'Shea on the run to prevent two Polar Bears from getting into scoring position.

Both teams had scoring chances all game. Middlebury left 11 runners on base including six in scoring position. Bowdoin stranded nine with four in scoring position. Polar Bear senior Adriane Krul and first-year catcher Claire McCarthy had two hits apiece for Bowdoin.

Sophomore Emily Griffin took the loss for Bowdoin giving up four hits and one run with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Junior Julia Geaumont allowed an unearned run without surrendering a hit while walking two with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Saturday's loss ends the fantastic career of Bowdoin seniors Adriane Krul, Siena Mitman, Victoria Rusch and Cielle Collins. The quartet led the Polar Bears to 109 wins over their careers and are the first senior class in Bowdoin softball history to reach the NESCAC Tournament in all four seasons.
