Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STANDISH, Maine- The Bowdoin softball team split a nonconference Wednesday doubleheader against the University of Southern Maine bouncing back from a 9-1 opening loss with a 12-4 victory in game two on the campus of Saint Joseph's College.

The Huskies (14-8) disrupted a three game win streak for the Polar Bears (15-6) who had yet to drop a game in state this season. Bowdoin travels to Tufts for a three game series beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m. as the Polar Bears resume conference play.

Game One Recap – USM 9, Bowdoin 1

Both sides were retired in order to open the game, with Bowdoin collecting the first hit of the day in the top of the second. Katie Gately led off with a single but her hit was erased as the Huskies turned a double play on the following batter. Nicole Nelson doubled to left center, but the Huskies forced the third out to strand the runner on second. Southern Maine answered with a pair of base runners in the bottom half of the inning, but Bowdoin's Alana Luzzio was able to recover and strike out two to help end the inning.

Southern Maine was the first team to break the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth with a six run inning that began with a leadoff walk. Kirsten Duross, Amber Kelly, and Samantha Crosman strung together consecutive singles with the Polar Bears making the play at home keep Southern Maine off the board following Crossman's shot. The Huskies were able to score on the following batter as Danni Humphrey walked, scoring one, and Ally Pillar followed with a two-run double to right center. Humphrey later scored on a Bowdoin error and Courtney Davis tallied two more RBI driving in runs with a single to center.

Pillar picked up her second double of the game in the bottom of the fifth, allowing Humphry to score and pushing the Huskies lead to 7-0. Bowdoin finally broke through in the following frame after putting runners on the corners. Julia Geaumont reached on a double and quickly advanced to third off a Gately single up the middle, coming around to score with a Cielle Collins sacrifice fly to right. That was all the offense Bowdoin was able to muster as Southern Maine put two more on the board to close out the sixth.

Luzzio fanned eight batters while allowing five earned runs in Wednesday's outing. Erika Millett allowed just five hits with one walk in six complete innings of work for the Huskies.

Game Two Recap – Bowdoin 12, USM 4

The Bowdoin bats came alive in the second game, scoring nine runs in the opening inning, to force a five-inning game two. Adriane Krul got the game started with a leadoff single and came around to score on the next batter as Marisa O'Toole put a bunt down the third baseline that was mishandled by defense. Collins and Nelson each drove in runs, Collins with an RBI single and Nelson with a two-run double, with Nelson coming around to score off another Huskies miscue. Bowdoin pushed another run across the plate before Geaumont would wrap up the offensive output with an RBi single.

In the bottom of the first, Geaumont escaped a bases loaded situation by striking out Pillar to end the inning. The Huskies did break through in the second off an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Lux that scored Humphry who had led off with a double. Bowdoin put its final runs on the board in the top of the fifth off a three-run blast by O'Toole. The Huskies responded with three of their own in the bottom half off a two-run double from Duross and RBI groundout by Kelly.

Geaumont pitched all five innings while allowing eight hits and three earned runs. The junior walked just two batters while collecting four strikeouts. Kelly pitched a complete game for Southern Maine allowing 11 hits with five K's.
