Softball Closes Out Spring Break Schedule With Split Decision

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team split its final double header of spring break with a 6-5 win over Fredonia State and 2-1 loss to Keene State.

The Polar Bears come home with an 11-5 record after two weeks of play in Florida. Bowdoin travels down to Trinity this weekend for its NESCAC opening series. The Bantams and Polar Bears will play one game at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader, beginning at noon, on Saturday. The games will be played at the University of Hartford.

After surrendering five runs in the first two innings to Fredonia, Bowdoin stormed back with six unanswered runs to capture a win. Katie Gately put the Polar Bears on the board, crossing home after Nicole Nelson put the ball in play. Gately opened the inning with a double to center. Gately scored again in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI double from Marisa O'Toole. Trailing Fradonia 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Bowdoin put up four runs to capture the lead. Victoria Rusch opened the inning with a leadoff single, scoring soon after as Adriane Krul tallied an RBI double to left. Krul crossed home, scoring Bowdoin's fourth of the game, as Julia Geaumont doubled to center. Geaumont would later score, as did Gately who crossed the plate thanks to a Cielle Collins single. Emily Griffin pitched all seven innings while allowing four walks and as many hits, with five strikeouts.

Facing Keene State, Geaumont pitched seven strong innings, but the Bowdoin bats were unable to push runners across the plate. Geaumont tallied three strikeouts with no walks and two earned runs in the 2-1 loss. After allowing runs in the second and sixth innings, Marisa O'Toole crossed home to spoil Keene's shutout. Alana Luzzio and Claire McCarthy both went 2 for 3 against the Owls.
