Back-To-Back Wins for Softball as Spring Break Schedule Nears Its End

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team's offense outscored opponents 20-5 in back-to-back wins over Ripon, with an 11-2 margin, and Smith with a 9-3 win.

The Polar Bears head into their final day of spring break play with a 10-4 record. Bowdoin concludes its Florida swing with a doubleheader against Fredonia State and Keene State in morning action.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single from Katie Gately in the top of the first against Ripon and added three more in following inning. Marisa O'Toole got the second inning scoring started, taking home on a passed ball, followed by a single to right off the bat of Alana Luzzio that scored Lauren O'Shea. Luzzio eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as the Polar Bears led Ripon 4-0 after two. The Redhawks cut the lead in half with a two run fourth, but Bowdoin again responded with three in the following inning. Nicole Nelson knocked in a pair of runs with a double to left, before being replaced by Ali Miller on the base path. Miller quickly scored on an O'Shea single to center putting Bowdoin ahead 7-2. After loading the bases with three consecutive singles to start the sixth, an error on Gately's ball to short allowed Adriane Krul to score. Nelson followed with a two-run RBI single to center, scoring Emily Griffin and Victoria Rusch. O'Shea tallied the final RBI of the game soon after. Luzzio went six innings in the circle for Bowdoin tallying three K's and no earned runs.

The Polar Bears put together a seven run fourth against Smith to dispatch the Pioneers in their second game of the evening. Again, Bowdoin put a run on the board in the first off a solo-shot by Julia Geaumont over the left field fence. Jordan Gowdy opened the bottom half of the third with a triple to right, crossing home one play later off Krul's left field double.  The Pioneers cut the lead in half, capitalizing on an error in the fourth, to pull within one. Bowdoin's outpouring in the fourth began with three straight singles followed by a Gowdy RBI line drive. Krul tallied her second double of the day to clear the bases. Griffin tagged a ball to left, allowing Krul to score, as the Polar Bears jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Gately closed out the inning with a two-run blast to left field. Smith chipped away at Bowdoin's lead with a two-run shot to straight away center, but the Polar Bears would hold on for the win. Geaumont allowed just one earned run in six innings of work, while walking one and striking out five.
