Box Score 4 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bowdoin softball team has opened the 2015 season winning three of its opening four games to begin the season in Florida.
The Polar Bears are now 3-1 after an opening day sweep of Salve Regina and Wesleyan. Bowdoin dispatched the Seahawks in a 7-2 contest before knocking off the Cardinals in a 7-1 nightcap. Bowdoin followed up with a 10-3 loss to Wisconsin- Stevens Point and an 11 inning win over Millikan, 6-5.
In their first inning of the season, the Polar Bears put up four runs after opening with consecutive singles from Adriane Krul, Emily Griffin, and Nicole Nelson. Katie Gately tallied the first RBI of the season as Krul scored from third off her single to right, followed quickly by Griffin scoring off a fielding error. Nelson and Gately added runs following Marissa O'Toole putting the ball in play. In the circle, Griffin pitched four complete innings before the Seahawks would come around a score, collecting all seven of strikeouts in those innings. Bowdoin tacked on a run in the fourth and answered a pair of Salve Regina runs in the fifth en route to a season opening win.
Against the Cardinals, Bowdoin put up at least one run in all but two innings. Claire McCarthy's double to center drove home Griffin in the top of the first, answered by an unearned Wesleyan run to tie the game in the second. Jordan Gowdy came around to score in the third off a Gately long-ball to center, to regain the lead. The Polar Bears continued to extend their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth off an RBI single by Griffin who eventually came around to score after Julia Geaumont put the ball in play. Grffin tallied her second RBI of the game in the sixth, while Geaumont closed out the scoring with a homerun to center that also drove in McCarthy. Geaumont went the distance for Bowdoin in the circle, allowing just one hit and one run with four strikeouts.
The Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point used a seven run seventh to break open a tie ballgame. Bowdoin took an early three run lead with runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. McCarthy's single to right allowed Griffin to score, Krul earned put up a sacrifice fly to center allowing Victoria Rusch to score, and Griffin singled to right allowing Rusch to score again in the fifth. The Pointers took control in the sixth and seventh innings scoring ten unanswered runs. Alana Luzzio opened the game for Bowdoin pitching 6.1 innings with nine strikeouts before giving way to Griffin who worked the final two outs of the game.
Bowdoin rebounded from its first loss with an 11-inning 6-5 victory over Millikin. Geaumont got the Polar Bear offense started with an RBI single to score Gowdy, answered by Millikin in the top of the fifth. The Big Blue put three runs on the board in the eighth off RBI singles from the four and five batters. Bowdoin bit back as Krul knocked in a pair with a double and Geaumont added an RBI single. The teams again traded runs in the tenth with sacrifice flies from both sides. Cielle Collins knocked in the game winning run with a single that allowed Lauren Nguyen to score. Geaumont pitched all 11 innings while striking out seven with only one walk.
