Women's Rugby Cruises Past Colby in Sunday Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team rolled to another victory, dispatching Colby 65-5 on Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-0 this fall with the victory.

How It Happened

  • Following an opening ten minutes of back and forth possession marked with handling errors and penalties on both sides, Bowdoin regrouped for the next 20 minutes and put together strong scrums, lineouts, and long passing & running plays to take command of the match

  • Flanker Anna Piotti played a smart game with strong defense, key tackles, lineout jumps, and accurate passes out of congestion to the backline.

  • The scrumhalf and flyhalf combo of Emily King and Sophie Meyers connected well and distributed the ball accurately to their targets for many scoring opportunities.

  • Outside center Le'Shauna Phinazee opened the scoring 12 minutes into the first half taking a crisp pass from her inside center Cammie Ogden-Fung and breaking tackles into the endzone.

  • Paige Pfannenstiel scored the first of her three tries five minutes later after looping the backline, taking a pass and sprinting through the defense down the right sideline

  • Addison Carvajal attacked from fullback, slotting into the backline and using footwork and speed to cover 50 meters for a try.  Carvajal converted three tries in the first half.

  • Carvajal complimented her speed on offense with tactical kicks, one of them fielded neatly by Phinazee on the run, and breaking a tackle to reach the try zone for her 2nd score.
  • Other scoring in the 1st half came off strong running by Cammie Ogden-Fung and from scrumhalf Emily King supporting Carvajal on a long run down field and taking the pass for the score. Bowdoin led 41-0 at the break.
  • Opening the scoring in the 2nd half, Colby committed a penalty deep in their zone and prop Pamela Zabala took the ball off a pass from scrumhalf King and powered her way to the endzone.
  • Heads up play from Pfannenstiel led to her third try, gathering up a loose lineout ball on the bounce and finding space through the Colby defense to ground the ball under the posts.
  • Bowdoin rounded out the scoring with Katie Craighill with a long run down the right wing, and Phinazee's third score.  Pfannenstiel had two second-half conversions.

  • Bowdoin will return to action next Saturday as they travel to Orono to take on the University of Maine at 1:00 p.m.
