Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team scored three goals in the second period to earn a 4-2 victory over the University of New England on Tuesday evening at Watson Arena.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-4-2 with the victory while the Nor'easters drop to 6-10-1.
Following a scoreless opening period that saw the Polar Bears own a 20-4 shot advantage, the Nor'easters broke through just 1:07 into the second frame. Jared Melman redirected a nice cross-ice feed from Christian Rossetti past Bowdoin's Max Fenkell to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Bowdoin exploded for three goals in a span of 6:58 late in the period to take the lead for good. Daniel McMullan got the Polar Bears on the board following a turnover in the UNE zone. McMullan ripped a shot from the slot that beat Nor'easter goaltender Colby Drost top-shelf at 10:55. Six minutes later, Connor Quinn skated behind the UNE net and found Camil Blanchet open on the back-post for his first career goal at 16:56. Just 37 seconds later a good forecheck by Quinn resulted in another UNE defensive turnover. The puck came to Coffey in front, who redirected a Quinn feed at 17:33 to give Bowdoin a 3-1 advantage.
The Nor'easters drew within a single goal at 6:38 of the final period as NIck Wirth tallied his first collegiate goal on the power play to make it 3-2. Bowdoin's defense held strong, however, and Matt Rubinoff sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Drost (6-7-1) swept aside 38 shots for UNE while Fenkell made 18 stops for Bowdoin. The Polar Bears were 0-3 on the power play while the Nor'easters converted on 1-2.
Bowdoin will return to action on Friday evening as they return to NESCAC play at Middlebury (7:00 p.m.). UNE will host Norwich on Friday evening (7:00 p.m.).
